Her words fell blunt, like angry rain. She was not angry, just tired of trying to be understood. English can be a tiresome language and words are worse. We sat there in the rain trying to converse, but the rain had a better way. It soaked us so wet the laughter took over and we ran across to the Crest Hotel, slightly delirious with the joy of being normal again.

Leah was from Finland ; we were room mates

in a Place we would never have met at, if not for the conference. I was still adjusting to a place that had no particular sunset ; the sun was a mild lemon yellow – too large, 9 pm, Amsterdam. Leah my Finnish friend smiled casually at it and  I couldn’t help thinking what a different race I was, brown skin and all, black lashes and long shirts. Leah was green eyed and blonde, one long earring, striped shirt and leather pants. Boots. She was the best room mate a girl could get, miles from home, in a swank hotel among things I had never seen before. I’ll tell you – she made coffee and chocolate for me as I came in late from the Media centre at the Rai – scolded me for taking too long in the bath, switched off lights with no further fuss. ” Go sleep.” She shouted softly, and I would grin hard, but she didn’t care.

I remembered Leah Lapinnonean ;for some reason, maybe its the rain, and that feeling you get when you remember things that made you a better person. What I learnt from Leah was that words matter, but people do look between them. Between lines and dots and dashes. There are no rules where everything is invisible, and that’s where really your pulse shows. This beats language dictates and grammer protocol.

My Finnish friend and I spent about two weeks together in Amsterdam, covering a Conference and that was an amazing experience for me. Though what stands out is what really transpires, between the lines, the pauses. The things we might never say, in words.
